Welcome to Cloud Academy's Lab Guide for Securing your VPC using Public and Private Subnets!
Students who are new to Cloud Academy or new to AWS, generally report that they ran into an issue in either the step named Create your first trail or the next step, Create a Bastion Host. It's important to remember that our Hands-on labs contain several restrictions on the student account you're accessing so if you deviate from the instructions in anyway, it's likely to cause permission errors and a failure of deployment.
Create your first Trail
First, let's take a look at how to create the trail.
I took screenshots of my configuration from my lab session and you can find them below:
1. Ensure that the lab environment is 100% completed. Click the Open Environment button to access the console. Use the student credentials provided in the lab to sign in
2. I have created the VPC, Internet Gateway, Public Subnet and passed the validation checks.
Creating a Bastion Host
Next, Let's look at my steps for Creating a Bastion Host.
1. For the step Creating a Bastion Host, I created the Bastion host following all the correct values in the instructions
Continue with the rest of the steps and ensure you have selected the correct region and that all settings, values, and names are exactly as described in the instructions. You should be able to complete the lab with the rest of the steps.
Connecting Via SSH
As for connecting to the instance via SSH, you can find detailed instructions on how to use those keypairs on your computer in our Help Center article called How do I connect to a Linux Instance using SSH?
If you're receiving "connection: Timeout" error messages, then you might have a corporate firewall or a network limitation. I suggest taking the Lab on a private network and seeing if it will go through.
I hope you have enjoyed our Lab Guide! If you continue to experience any issues or if you have any further questions, please email email@example.com or use the Submit a Request link at the top of this page.
